| The Orkney Islands are an archipelago 10 miles north of mainland Scotland. There are 72 of the islands, of which 27 are inhabited. The population is about 19,500, of which about 7,500 live in Kirkwall, the largest town. Sites visited here were: * The Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar - The remains of ancient rings of stones, the purpose of whch are not known. The stones are smaller than those of Stonehenge. * Skaill House - A mansion, parts of which date back to 1620. It is owned by Major Malcolm MacRae. * Skara Brae - The remains of a neolithic settlement occupied from about 3100 - 2500 BC and discovered about 1850. * Italian Chapel - A place of worship that was originally two small huts but was converted into a beautiful chapel by Italian POWs of World War II. |
