| 2009 was the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns, the National Poet of Scotland. In his honor, the country invited Scots and descendants of Scots from around the world to attend Homecoming Scotland, a gathering of the clans, in Edinburgh on July 25 and 26. The Clan MacRae Society moved its gathering that was planned for 2010 to the weekend following the Homecoming so clan members could attend both events in one trip. The MacRae Gathering was held in and around the MacRae Castle on Eilean Donan in Dornie. Bruce and Judy McRae, who live in Colorado, organized a two-week tour to include both of these events, with day tours out of Stirling during the week between and a visit to the Orkney Islands for the week following the MacRae gathering. Rebecca, Pat, and I were among the more than 80 MacRaes on the tour. We stayed an extra day, drove to Dumfriesshire, and visited sites associated with my Nicol and Wright ancestors, who emigrated from there to Kentucky. The links below lead to some of my pictures from the tour. Watch for "Next Page" links on some pages to avoid missing pictures on sections with multiple pages. Where there are columns of links, as below, work down the first column, then the second, etc. |
