Neolithic Skara Brae had two phases, and the majority of the
remains you see at Skara Brae belong to the second period. House
9 (in front of you) and house 10 (to your right) are the visible
remains of the earlier village. House 9 has a similar plan to
the later houses except that its box beds are recessed into the
wall rather than projecting from it. We know that the earlier
village had a different plan, but little is known about it
because further exploration would require demolition of the
better-preserved later houses. |
